Abstract

This standard provides comprehensive guidance for the inspection and requalification of acetylene cylinders, including both the shell and porous mass. It is intended for use by manufacturers, fillers, distributors, requalification facilities, and safety personnel involved in the handling of acetylene cylinders. The standard aligns with regulatory requirements set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada (TC), referencing Title 49 CFR and CSA B339, respectively.

It addresses industry practices for determining minimum wall thickness, acknowledging variations in steel grades and manufacturing processes. The scope includes cylinders manufactured under DOT and TC specifications, as well as those produced under special permits or exemptions.

While it does not cover UN acetylene cylinders regulated by ISO standards, it provides essential procedures for visual inspections and periodic requalification. This eighth edition incorporates the latest industry updates and reinforces the importance of regulatory compliance and safety in acetylene cylinder operations.
