Abstract

This standard outlines the design requirements for over-the-road equipment used in compressed natural gas (CNG) service, specifically focusing on systems utilizing composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs) for CNG storage. It applies to both tube trailers and multi-element gas containers (MEGCs) mounted on container chassis, collectively referred to as "units." The document addresses critical considerations for manufacturers and assemblers, including piping configurations, fire protection, and crash protection, which may differ due to the unique characteristics of COPVs. It covers units transporting pipeline-quality natural gas under U.S. Department of Transportation regulations or special permits issued by PHMSA. While this standard does not include COPV design and testing protocols, it references relevant ISO standards for those aspects.
