H-18: Safe Operation of Hydrogen, Carbon Monoxide, and Syngas Pipeline Systems

This publication provides guidelines for the safe operation and maintenance of land-based industrial gas transmission pipelines transporting gaseous hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and syngas. It summarizes current industry practices based on the experience of major producers in Western Europe and North America and discusses how these gases affect pipeline integrity management programs, particularly for pipelines located in the public domain. The guidance applies to in-service pipelines and pipelines being considered for repurposing, within defined temperature and pressure limits, and includes high-level considerations for hydrogen blending into natural gas systems.
This publication does not apply to offshore pipelines, liquid pipelines, pipelines constructed of nonmetallic materials, abandoned pipelines, or systems associated with production plants, cylinder filling plants, compressor units, bulk customer facilities, or specialized equipment piping. Gases other than hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and syngas are outside the scope, except as specifically noted. Applicable national and local regulations may supersede the practices described.
