P-81: Standard for Microbulk Liquid Nitrogen Supply Systems

Abstract

This publication establishes a standard for microbulk liquid nitrogen supply systems, detailing minimum requirements and recommended practices for their design, construction, installation, operation, and maintenance. It applies to systems from the fill connection to the nitrogen discharge outlets for both liquid and gas phases.

The standard excludes portable tanks built to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) specifications. It emphasizes the importance of qualified personnel for downstream installation due to the hazardous nature of liquid nitrogen. While serving as a guideline for user installations, final design and equipment approval remains the responsibility of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
