PS-79: CGA Position Statement on Updated Requirements for Medical Oxygen and Medical Air Cylinder Labels

This publication describes CGA's position on the new requirements for medical oxygen and medical air cylinder labels.

Amendments to Title 21 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR) Part 201.161 as part of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Final Rule published on June 18, 2024, and set to go into effect on December 18, 2025, establish new requirements for labeling of medical oxygen and medical air cylinders.

Likewise, amendments to Title 29 of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (29 CFR) Part 1910.1200 as part of U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Final Rule on May 20, 2024, and set to go into effect for covered chemicals on January 19, 2026, establish new requirements for hazard communication for labeling of compressed gas cylinders.

To help firms meet the labeling deadline of December 18, 2025, this publication provides examples of medical oxygen and medical air cylinder shoulder and sidewall labels in advance of the next revision to CGA C-7, Guide to Classification and Labeling of Compressed Gases. When revised and published in the second half of 2025, CGA C-7 will provide detailed requirements of these Final Rules.
